A few years back this was something which was not possible. Or you had to have connects with the Telco who will reverse phone number their database and give the details. Why is it needed? For various reasons but the basic reason is very simple. Curiosity. Everything else is built on it. Some Telcos in the world offer their directory services look up through internet. Some Telcos don’t even bother to provide Reverse Phone lookup.

With the explosion of mobile devices, the entire telecom ecosystem has gone through a radical change. 4 Years back we carried 1 or 2 mobile devices. Today it is 3 or 4. What may happen tomorrow? No idea. But most of the mobile devices depend on a Telco for connectivity. A independent survey shows the first two commonly used mobile devices are a smart phone and a regular, basic, mobile phone just for voice. Then come your Tablets and laptops. So the predominant amount of devices are voice devices only. Now comes the problem. How do you know who calls you? The number of telcos is maddeningly humongous and there is no central repository of user database.

Let us separate things there to two. Deskphones and Mobilephones. Deskphones are still manageable as they are fixed to one address and the number of Telcos who provide landlines globally are lesser compared to the wild count of mobile phone operators. There are countries which have 8 to 10 Operators for one state. You can presume the chaos. With so much of information overflow, even for security reasons Reverse phone lookup becomes inevitable. IT has come to a brink of a situation that there can be no central authority which can ensure such a service. Prepaid phone numbers are simply not possible to trace.

Solution? There is a new trend which is catching up which is yet to see success. Logicwise it’s a wonderful idea, but still, it is not fool proof or something you can depend on. TrueCaller is a service intended for smartphones. Available for major mobile environments as of today, what it does is very simple. It uploads the phonebook from your phone and posts to a common repository. Similarly for every user. Result is interesting, the number which is not known to me may be in some other gentleman’s phonebook. When that new number calls me, the application checks the same over 3G and prompts you with a prompt based on the record in the central database. As I said earlier, there are a lot of dependencies to this. It cannot be guaranteed that every number will be listed. But still works effectively to identify common numbers like, Credit Card Companies, Banks, Telcos, Telemarketers etc. It lets you mark a call as spam also which makes it a bit sweeter.

To Conclude, the only fact to accept is that with this much information flowing through everywhere, unless and until there is a strong and commonly accepted policy and system to have a centralized database globally, among all telcos, which will constantly be updated, it will be virtually impossible to do a reverse phone lookup.

In our way too urban piece of life we seem to forget what the world looks like. The sad thing is that many people discover the wonders and the beauties of nature from the shows they see on TV. But the fact remains that if you have the possibility from a financial point of view and also the willingness to do it, you can visit yourself one of the most beautiful places in the world where the animals are still in their element.

One of the best choices for such an adventure is the Tanzania holidays.
