Den gamle Kro Restaurant

In the center of Odense (Denmark) and very near the former home of Hans Christian Andersen, is the Den gamle Kro restaurant.

We discovered by accident one rainy night and blizzards, the kind that feel like being at home, next to the stove. But if you stay at a bed & breakfast alternatives are out and dinner snacks. And fortunately we decided to leave.

Den gamle Kro Restaurant

The Den gamle Kro is Nedergade (street Neder) and is one of the oldest buildings in Odense, with more than 300 years behind them.

When we entered the restaurant we were impressed: this is a really friendly site. The decor is a bit mixed but very well integrated with the different spaces that are part of the premises. The lighting, the details of presentation … Everything you need to create a charming atmosphere.

Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde

This museum holds the remains of five Viking ships rescued the late twentieth century the waters of the fjord. It is believed that the ships were sunk in the mid-eleventh century by the people of the city to block the fjord and to avoid any imminent attack from the sea.

Roskilde is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Located inside Zealand (the island where Copenhagen is also), on the southern edge of a large fjord that connects with the North Sea.

It was one of the most important Viking towns, no doubt by its unique strategic position and became the capital of what is now Denmark.

The train is the easiest way to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen, as the two cities are a little over 30 miles.

Roskilde Cathedral

One of the symbols of the city is the Cathedral, the Gothic style, declared Patrimony of Humanity. It was the first cathedral built in brick, practically the only value possible in a country where there are no mountains to extract stone.

Another point of interest, and that impressed me most to me personally is the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibsmuseet)

Kronborg Castle

First thing we went by train to Elsinore (Helsingør) to visit the famous Kronborg Castle, setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Danish town of Elsinore (Danish Helsingør) is located in northeast Zealand, some 40 kilometers north of Copenhagen.

We left by train from Central Station (Hovedbanegården) first thing in the morning with the intention to visit Kronborg Castle, and little else … We plan to collect the rental car and go to Odense to arrive before six o’clock.

Kronborg Castle is a fortress built by Frederick II between 1574 and 1585. It is situated in the narrowest part of the Øresund, the strait between the coast of Sealand and the coast of Sweden. The cities located at either end of this bottleneck are Helsingor (Denmark) and Helsingborg (Sweden).

Kronborg Castle

His position of strength is no accident. The castle was built expressly to force the ships that crossed the strait to pay a toll.

The appearance of the Danish castle has few similarities with the image of the castle to which they are used for example in Spain. Perhaps these are more like fortified palaces.

Kronborg Castle in the Renaissance style is one of the largest in Northern Europe and has been declared a World Heritage Site. The room inside the fortress is truly impressive.

Old Center of Copenhagen

Copenhagen’s medieval area (old downtown) is a set of pedestrian streets in the triangle formed by the City Hall Square West, Kongens Nytorv Station Nørreport east and north.

The origin of what is now known as Copenhagen is situated at the beginning of the eleventh century, a small fishing settlement known simply as havn (port). Later this port acquired greater significance since the commercial standpoint, and renamed Købmandshavn: ‘Bay of merchants’, a name which finally resulted in Kobenhavn.

Gradually the city grew around the port, especially under the rule of Absalon, bishop of Roskilde. And at the end of the sixteenth century as Copenhagen is a city rich and powerful.

Copenhagen

Throughout its history, Copenhagen has suffered several devastating flaming and various attacks that partially destroyed the city. Not preserved almost medieval buildings, but of later times.

The old center of Copenhagen is still the heart of the city and retains the spirit of their origins: Bay merchants.
