The castle built in the mid-sixteenth century can say now is the best preserved of all built in Europe.

Depending on the time of construction in the civil war the country loomed constructions were done thinking about protection rather than on the aesthetic, but the castle Egeskov contains a unique beauty.

It is one of the few that are built around a lake and in the fables and stories. As historians have only gateway was a bridge.

His great stay for centuries due to the solid oak construction on piles away from your name.

From the architectural point of view we can say that is pure Renaissance style and the plant is divided into two buildings, this separation was carried out for the fight, we could separate a part of the castle leaving momentarily safe.

An important piece that was very useful during battle was the construction of two towers of a great dimension to those who defended the castle could attack from a great height and sometimes even unseen.
Undoubtedly one of the architectural jewels of Denmark giving a great importance on Fyn island where the castle is.

Each year it receives a large number of tourists to see one of the finest buildings of the twentieth century.
The care of the castle are really hard to try to keep you safe from landslides, and causing damage over time.

After visiting the Palace of Amalienborg and Marmorkirken, back to the banks of the canal, Larsens Plads, which will travel north towards Kastellet, the fortified citadel of Copenhagen. Along with this military buildup is the famous Little Mermaid statue.

Larsens Plads leads, taking a leisurely stroll along the water, to Kastellet, the military fortress that was part of the fortified city in the seventeenth century.

Just at the southern entrance Kastellet in Churchillparken, we find the source Gefion.

According to Norse mythology, was the goddess Gefion, along with their four children, represented by powerful oxen, separated the island of Zealand (Zealand) from Sweden and transported to where it is now. According to legend, the missing piece that takes Sweden Lake Vänern (it is curious that the shape and size of this lake is similar to the territory of the island of Zealand).

Near the fountain is the church of Saint Alban (Alban Sant Kirke), one of the most beautiful churches we saw in Denmark.

This is the only Anglican church in Denmark and style contrasts sharply with the Danish cathedrals. The building is in the late nineteenth century As we commented, the stones needed for construction were brought from Sweden, because Denmark is a country with virtually no hills and granite quarries from which to draw or similar materials. It appears however that some of the materials were brought from the cliffs of Stevns, Denmark.

The history of the church and the Anglican church in Denmark is rather curious, you can read on the website of this congregation.

Inside the citadel still in use military buildings, but the defensive walls, ie the perimeter of a park Kastellet way we can hang out.

After the short boat trip we arrived at the Amalienborg Palace just before the changing of the guard. The truth is that we had not planned well, but it’s worth seeing because it’s pretty funny. So if you’re a few days in Copenhagen, booking a place at 12:00 in the morning to watch the maneuvers of the soldiers who are part of the Danish Royal Guard.

What is known as Amalienborg Palace is actually an octagonal structure made up of four palaces that surround a central plaza, the Amalienborg Square.

Eighteenth century buildings are designed in accordance with a rococo style. Today is the winter residence of the Danish royal family.

In the center of the square stands the equestrian statue of Frederick V

The Royal Guard parade actually begins at 11:30. The soldiers leave Rosenborg Castle (Rosenborg Slot) and make the journey through the Latin Quarter area, Østergade, Kongens Nytorv, Sankt Anna Plads .. up to Amalienborg.

Here comes the changing of the guard, with the protocol and the peculiarity of such military actions that serve to keep the tradition but are a tourist attraction.

NOTE: The Changing of the Guard takes place only when the queen is living in the palace. From this we learned later, reading a comment

After the changing of the guard decided to visit the museum (Amalienborg Museum) on one of the palaces, namely the Chirstian VIII.

This museum contains some of the royal collections (some were at the Rosenborg Castle), including the room of Frederik VII, as well as furniture and items that were part of everyday life of different kings.

Interestingly, although not perhaps have much time there more interesting things to see in Copenhagen. It is also true that the visit is usually short-lived.

Nowadays, although still have a military use, is one of the sights of Copenhagen. Kastellet Nearby stands the statue of The Little Mermaid.

Christian IV was planning to build a castle on this site, but finally the project was not carried out due to lack of funds.

Frederick III Christian IV’s successor, continued the construction of the fort, which was the first line of defense against enemy attacks directed from the sea.

The engineer Henrik Ruse finally rebuilt and extended the fortification, which was completed in 1663 and was renamed Citadellet Frederikshavn. Over time it was known simply as Kastellet.

The design of the walls is typical Kastellet bastioned enclosure of the time. Allows any area of the wall can be defended from at least two points, to prevent attempts to assault it could concentrate on a single point.

The Kastellet only two access points, north and south of the site.

Today the Citadel serves as military barracks, but it is a public access area and is in fact one of the most typical of Copenhagen.

Inside you can find antique guns that were part of defensive weaponry at different times.

And there on the premises a windmill at first glance appears to be out of place. But this is not an ornament, the citadel was in part self-sufficient and the mill originally had its role alongside other elements of strength to meet the needs of soldiers in case of siege.

Close to the fort is a statue of The Little Mermaid.

Denmark is one of the world’s oldest monarchies, and it has left its clear traces in the form of unique palaces and gardens.

The royal palaces
Several of the Danish castles used today by the Danish royal family. In the middle of Copenhagen is Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II’s home in the winter half-year, Amalienborg, with its four almost identical rococo mansions around the monumental castle space. Two of the mansions are partially open to the public.

In Zealand, it is beautifully situated Fredensborg Palace where the royal couple-holder for the summer. The castle is normally open to tours in high summer. Other royal palaces are released for other use and is home today public institutions, government and parliament, museums, etc.

Fortresses
The castles were often royal power bastions placed strategically for defense against enemies. The enemies came from the south where the impressive fortress Koldinghus located near the old border with Germany, or from the east, where Kronborg Castle in Elsinore guardian Sound estuary.

Nobility homes
In addition to Denmark’s royal palaces are nobility many castles and manor houses like pearls in the landscape. Here are all of architectural history, styles represented from middelalderfæstningens severity of Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Empire to a mixture of everything. The impressive house tells both Denmark’s history, cultural history, architecture, history and especially family history, because in many cases, the castle has the same ancestral heritage for centuries.

Artists’ retreats
The Danish castles have for centuries been the housing and power centers of the royal family, nobility and a narrow elite. At the same time, they have been sanctuaries for great Danish artists who were invited inside and got a unique environment to work in.-the poet HC Andersen and the composer Carl Nielsen were frequent guests at the Danish castles and manors.

Open castles
Previously, wrought iron gate locked and oak door so closed to the public, but in our day has 60 small castles and manor houses in the association Danish Castles & Manor opened its doors to the public. More than 20 of these castles and manor houses offer exciting accommodation options with a whiff of nobility and history. Living in one of the Danish castles is like to live in the middle of Denmark’s history. Here sleeps in poster beds in classy interiors, eating in halls or historical vaults and takes a walk in the finest landscaping.

On the island of Ven, located between Denmark and Sweden on the Oresund Strait, are the remains of Uraniborg, the castle was built by the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe.

By the late sixteenth century, a famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe built a castle (Uraniborg) on the island of Ven to be used as an observatory.

Uraniborg became a research and study center which grew to more than 40 astronomers working at facilities. .Later Brahe decided to build Stjernborg (castle of the stars), an underground observatory that allowed to obtain more accurate astronomical measurements.

Stjernborg The observatory was completed in 1584, making it the first astronomical observatory created exclusively for accurately measuring the positions of stars and the orbits of the planets.

1950 Archaeological excavations revealed the remains of the observatory buildings and the reconstruction of the upper complex.

The observations made by Tycho Brahe in this place and the amount of data collected represented a fundamental change on the design of the universe in his time.

Tycho Brahe also designed around the castle on the island of Ven one of the most advanced Renaissance gardens of his time. Today you can see more than half the original garden.

You can also visit the Museum Tycho Brahe, which shows some of the original astronomical devices Uraniborg, and where you can get information on the life and work of the astronomer.

Ven island now belongs to Sweden.

The famous brewer Carl Jacobsen (Carlsberg beer) donated to the public in the late nineteenth century, its collections of modern and ancient art. The Danish Government and the city of Copenhagen were responsible for building the museum, which opened in 1906.

The Glyptotek is formed by the two original buildings separated by the Winter Garden, together with Henning Larsen building that includes a collection of French painting. Glyptotek name refers to the collection of sculptures.

The collection of ancient sculptures traces a route from the Near East (Sumer, Babylon and Assyria), through ancient Egypt, and the collection of Greek sculptures, considered one of the best in the world, the Etruscan art and the rich collection of Roman art.

The modern collection consists mainly of Danish paintings and sculptures (the so-called Danish Golden Age) and French of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It includes over 30 works by Rodin.

For its part, the French painting collection includes works by David, Courbet, Corot, Manet, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro, Monet and Gauguin.

We recommend visiting the chronological order of the collections.

The Winter Garden is a wonderful place of relaxation and as a transition between different areas of the museum.

It’s worth climbing to the roof again … The Copenhagen view is simply spectacular.

This museum holds the remains of five Viking ships rescued the late twentieth century the waters of the fjord. It is believed that the ships were sunk in the mid-eleventh century by the people of the city to block the fjord and to avoid any imminent attack from the sea.

Roskilde is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Located inside Zealand (the island where Copenhagen is also), on the southern edge of a large fjord that connects with the North Sea.

It was one of the most important Viking towns, no doubt by its unique strategic position and became the capital of what is now Denmark.

The train is the easiest way to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen, as the two cities are a little over 30 miles.

One of the symbols of the city is the Cathedral, the Gothic style, declared Patrimony of Humanity. It was the first cathedral built in brick, practically the only value possible in a country where there are no mountains to extract stone.

Another point of interest, and that impressed me most to me personally is the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibsmuseet)

This museum holds the remains of five Viking ships rescued the late twentieth century the waters of the fjord. It is believed that the ships were sunk in the middle of the eleventh century by the inhabitants of the city to block the fjord and to avoid any imminent attack from the sea.

Also shown are other elements related to the Vikings and navigation at the time. Outside the museum houses replicas of the ships built following the same techniques used by the Vikings.

Returning to the center of Roskilde can stroll through its pedestrian and, if time permits, have a coffee (or even ice cream) in one of the terraces.
