What is known as Amalienborg Palace is actually an octagonal structure made up of four palaces that surround a central plaza, the Amalienborg Square.

Christian IV was planning to build a castle on this site, but finally the project was not carried out due to lack of funds.

Frederick III Christian IV’s successor, continued the construction of the fort, which was the first line of defense against enemy attacks directed from the sea.

The engineer Henrik Ruse finally rebuilt and extended the fortification, which was completed in 1663 and was renamed Citadellet Frederikshavn. Over time it was known simply as Kastellet.

The royal palaces
Several of the Danish castles used today by the Danish royal family. On the island of Ven, located between Denmark and Sweden on the Oresund Strait, are the remains of Uraniborg, the castle was built by the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe.

By the late sixteenth century, a famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe built a castle (Uraniborg) on the island of Ven to be used as an observatory.

Uraniborg became a research and study center which grew to more than 40 astronomers working at facilities. .Later Brahe decided to build Stjernborg (castle of the stars), an underground observatory that allowed to obtain more accurate astronomical measurements.

Stjernborg The observatory was completed in 1584, making it the first astronomical observatory created exclusively for accurately measuring the positions of stars and the orbits of the planets.

1950 Archaeological excavations revealed the remains of the observatory buildings and the reconstruction of the upper complex.

The observations made by Tycho Brahe in this place and the amount of data collected represented a fundamental change on the design of the universe in his time.

Tycho Brahe also designed around the castle on the island of Ven one of the most advanced Renaissance gardens of his time. Today you can see more than half the original garden.

You can also visit the Museum Tycho Brahe, which shows some of the original astronomical devices Uraniborg, and where you can get information on the life and work of the astronomer.

Ven island now belongs to Sweden.

The famous brewer Carl Jacobsen (Carlsberg beer) donated to the public in the late nineteenth century, its collections of modern and ancient art. The Danish Government and the city of Copenhagen were responsible for building the museum, which opened in 1906.

The Glyptotek is formed by the two original buildings separated by the Winter Garden, together with Henning Larsen building that includes a collection of French painting. Glyptotek name refers to the collection of sculptures.

The collection of ancient sculptures traces a route from the Near East (Sumer, Babylon and Assyria), through ancient Egypt, and the collection of Greek sculptures, considered one of the best in the world, the Etruscan art and the rich collection of Roman art.

The modern collection consists mainly of Danish paintings and sculptures (the so-called Danish Golden Age) and French of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It includes over 30 works by Rodin.

For its part, the French painting collection includes works by David, Courbet, Corot, Manet, Degas, Sisley, Pissarro, Monet and Gauguin.

The Winter Garden is a wonderful place of relaxation and as a transition between different areas of the museum.

This museum holds the remains of five Viking ships rescued the late twentieth century the waters of the fjord. It is believed that the ships were sunk in the mid-eleventh century by the people of the city to block the fjord and to avoid any imminent attack from the sea.

Roskilde is one of the oldest cities in Denmark. Located inside Zealand (the island where Copenhagen is also), on the southern edge of a large fjord that connects with the North Sea.

It was one of the most important Viking towns, no doubt by its unique strategic position and became the capital of what is now Denmark.

The train is the easiest way to get to Roskilde from Copenhagen, as the two cities are a little over 30 miles.

One of the symbols of the city is the Cathedral, the Gothic style, declared Patrimony of Humanity. It was the first cathedral built in brick, practically the only value possible in a country where there are no mountains to extract stone.

Another point of interest, and that impressed me most to me personally is the Viking Ship Museum (Vikingeskibsmuseet)

This museum holds the remains of five Viking ships rescued the late twentieth century the waters of the fjord. It is believed that the ships were sunk in the middle of the eleventh century by the inhabitants of the city to block the fjord and to avoid any imminent attack from the sea.

Also shown are other elements related to the Vikings and navigation at the time. Outside the museum houses replicas of the ships built following the same techniques used by the Vikings.

Returning to the center of Roskilde can stroll through its pedestrian and, if time permits, have a coffee (or even ice cream) in one of the terraces.
