On the island of Ven, located between Denmark and Sweden on the Oresund Strait, are the remains of Uraniborg, the castle was built by the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe.

By the late sixteenth century, a famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe built a castle (Uraniborg) on the island of Ven to be used as an observatory.

Uraniborg became a research and study center which grew to more than 40 astronomers working at facilities. .Later Brahe decided to build Stjernborg (castle of the stars), an underground observatory that allowed to obtain more accurate astronomical measurements.

Stjernborg The observatory was completed in 1584, making it the first astronomical observatory created exclusively for accurately measuring the positions of stars and the orbits of the planets.

1950 Archaeological excavations revealed the remains of the observatory buildings and the reconstruction of the upper complex.

The observations made by Tycho Brahe in this place and the amount of data collected represented a fundamental change on the design of the universe in his time.

Tycho Brahe also designed around the castle on the island of Ven one of the most advanced Renaissance gardens of his time. Today you can see more than half the original garden.

You can also visit the Museum Tycho Brahe, which shows some of the original astronomical devices Uraniborg, and where you can get information on the life and work of the astronomer.

Ven island now belongs to Sweden.
