Danes are known descendants after the paladin Vikings. They were 1000 years ago among the world’s best sailors, who went on long voyages to England, Iceland – perhaps even America. But how was it to sail in their elegant ships?

Yes, why not find out – by trying for yourself!

It gives you and your family the opportunity at Roskilde last year. Several times each day during the summer rallies both directly descended from Viking ships from Port Museum in Roskilde’s famous Viking Ship Museum. 12-18 man in each boat has a sail knowledgeable skipper in the stern to guide the participants safely through the 50 minute long trip.

A little less than 30 kilometers from Copenhagen, the Danish capital, lies the fishing village of Roslkide, Viking source population was the capital of the kingdom since the twelfth century to the mid-fifteenth century. In those days the tradition persists to bury the Danish monarchs in his cathedral, declared Patrimony of Humanity.

Inside one of its imposing chapel is the tomb of Christian IV, a national icon in the seventeenth century tried to keep the privilege of Denmark as a leading power in northern Europe and populated the country of magnificent Renaissance buildings.

Viking ships

Even more ancient are the five Viking ships that were extracted from the bottom of Roskilde Fjord thousand years after it sank into the sea. These relics of nautical exhibits Vikingeskibmuseet in a place that also allows a tour aboard a replica of these longship, the name by which these vessels are known.

But this quiet coastal town of cobbled streets and quiet pause, dishevel each year during the first days of July with the celebration of the Roskilde Rock Festival, classical music event of the continent that recovered annually, for a whopping 38 years, the best spirit of Woodstock.

Over 100,000 people attend the meeting in the Danish city during the four days that this year’s duration, from 2 to July 5, to enjoy and have fun around the various scenarios which provide the framework for more than a hundred performances, film screenings, all sorts of cultural and musical events among which, this year, Oasis, Coldplay, The Mars Volta, Lil Wayne, The Pet Shop Boys, Kanye West or the evergreen Nick Cave.
